“Our headmaster came over and said that there’s a whole new Tank Top White Sheath Column Military Ball/Evening Dres code for prom, ” said Caroline Cummings, a Shelton High school senior. Students have been flooding our Report-It inbox with pictures of their prom gowns. They say the principal announced the dress code no one knew about Friday morning: no backless dresses, no cut-outs, and no two-piece outfits in which the midriff is exposed. The teens say the problem is that they bought their dresses months ago and won’t have time to make alterations. They’re afraid if they wear the dresses, they won’t be allowed in the prom.
Students aren’t the only ones upset. Many parents say they’re worried the hundreds of dollars they’ve spent on a dress, alterations, limo, and flowers is going out the window. School officials issued the following statement about the controversy: Those attending next weekend’s Junior/Senior prom have been made aware of what has been deemed ‘appropriate’ dress, which is included in the student manual that is provided at the beginning of each school year. Recently, some students began sharing photos of their prom dresses to facilitators and staff, where a handful were considered inappropriate, too unveiling, and overexposed.
That is when choosing one was of the Headmaster to re-interate, once again, the appropriate prom dress guidelines. At this point, we are aware of six or seven dresses which were deemed inappropriate. However, there will still be an opportunity for those students to have that decision reviewed further, as soon as Friday. We made sure that guidelines were set well before this event, so that both students and their parents were aware of our expectations, due to the fact that issue, some very questionable dresses were worn by a few to prom. We don’t want to be in a position to turn anyone away at the door. We end up needing this to be a safe and memorable evening for everyone. ”.
